Brief von Monsignor Markos Gebremedhin, katholischer Bischof von Jimma/Bonga vom 15. April 2010

The Short History of Apostolic Vicariate of Jimma-Bonga and The Development program of Warwara and Agarobushi by SAED ETIOPIA

The Apostolic Vicariate of Jimma-Bonga is situated at the south-west of Ethiopia and The town of Jimma where bishop residence is 350km from the capital Addis Ababa and the town of Bonga is 445 km from Addis Ababa with approximate population of 3, 500.

According to the information we have , the Catholic Church started its mission in the area since 16th century by Jesuit missionaries who came to help the king of Ethiopia from Muslim envasion. Though the political situation didn’t create good opportunity for expansion of the evangelization work, the church tried its best to continue the good initiatives taken by the pioneers.

The first Vicar Apostolic by name Cardinal Guilamo Messaih an Italian Captune missionary who was appointed in 1846 by the Holy See laid very good foundation for the possibilities of serving the people with integrated ministry which is both pastoral care and social ministry like education, health , agriculture and women promotion and so on.

The missionaries together with local clergy preached the word of God by the language understood by the local people and they acculturated them selves to the culture and life style of the people.

They prompted formal education and such away they changed the lives of the thousands of the people. Many of the educated people in the leadership position at the moment are either had their education in the Catholic schools or supported indirectly by the Catholic Church.

It was only in 1978 the communist government destroyed the Catholic Church by confiscating the property and expelled all the expatriate missionaries out of the region and harassed and imprisoned indigenous clergy , closed all the schools run by the Catholic church and all other social services like health programs and agricultural facilities and programs and other social services under the catholic Church.

Such action lead the people especially the beneficiaries to great confusion and extreme poverty , in other side the people never appreciated the communist ( Marxist) way but remained united in mind and heart in worshiping God in midst of all their problems and darkness.

After many efforts and struggle the Catholic Church was able to reopen and begin both socio-pastoral activities already cut off for the number of years.

I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all those who encouraged us and walked side by side and offered their kind support for the fulfilment of our goal.

My appreciation goes to the people of Switzerland in especial way to facilitating committee members of SAED ETIOPIA by name Mrs. Ruth Brogini , Maria Fornera and Germano Simona for taking initative and necessary steps and came all the way from Losone –Switzerland together with city mayor Mr. Alberto Colombi and people of good will who supported financially the construction of the nursery school at county village called ‘Warwara’ and now the construction of health post is underway at the particular village called ‘Agaro bushi’ which is one of the remotest areas in the Vicariate.

While appreciating your generous hand and heart for the realization of the above mentioned goal, we are confident to tell you that once the above mentioned project is being completed thousands of children and adults will be benefited from the service and their life situation will be improved a lot.

At the same time the opening of the health post will be a good news for the mothers who witnessed the death of many poor women during their delivery because of the lack of health facilities and care in surrounding areas.

I am sure all the beneficiaries, people of God and government are in favour of such work and very grateful to you all. While humbly asking you for the continuation of your generous financial support, I assure you my cooperation as well as the members of the Apostolic Vicariate of Jimma-Bonga.

May the Almighty God continue to bless all your good works and efforts,

Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ,

Monsgr.Markos Gebremedhin CM
